Hood Defeats Volleyball, 3-1, in Cross-MAC Match

Frederick, MD (October 5) – In what was supposed to be a tri-match hosted by Hood, became a dual match against the host as the FDU-Florham Volleyball team (9-9, 1-1 MAC Freedom) captured the first set, but let the next three slip to the Hood Blazers ( 6-11, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth), 3-1.

Seen at the top of the statistics sheet for FDU-Florham was Lilli Nawrotzki (Flemington, NJ) had herself a game as she reached a career-high of 25 assists, as well as another career-high of 7 service aces. First-year Genevieve Fitch (Charleston, SC) found herself on both sides of the ball as she led the team in digs with 19 and amassed 11 kills.

Set 1: FDU-Florham was able to pull away early in the first set as a four-point run helped build the momentum for the Devils. Hood was slowly able to catch up and tie the score at 12-12 for the first time in the match after a kill by a Blazer.  The set continued to bounce back a fourth on the scoreboard between the two teams until a kill by Fitch and a service ace by Nawrotzki allowed the score to be in favor of the Devils before a Hood attack error gave FDU the 31-29 first-set win.

Set 2: The Devils started out the second set on positives as two service aces allowed them to pull ahead on a 6-3 run. A team effort of kills helped the Devil raise the score even more but the effort was not enough as Hood tied the score at 13-13 and proceeded to take the lead until the 21st points. The Blazers saw their opportunity with the end soon near and closed the set on six straight points, 25-21 to even the match with a set apiece.

Set 3: The momentum began to flip for the Devils as the lead was first given to the Blazers but was seen tied at 5-5 after a kill from Meghan Kreinberg (Union, NJ). The offensive effort for the Devils was slowed as they only scored four points by the time Hood reached their 20th. FDU was able to secure three additional points off of Hood before ultimately losing the set by a 25-15 score.

Set 4: In FDU's maybe final effort to remain in the match with their cross-MAC opponent, They were able to secure the first point but were not able to keep the serve as Hood went on a 10-3 lead. After seeing an attack error from the Blazers, the Devils used the opportunity to make their offensive move as they tied the fourth set at 13-13. The Blazers did not want to lose the opportunity they had to seal the win therefore raising the scoreboard to read 21-16. Sophomore Samantha Schneider (South Brunswick, NJ)  was able to sneak one final kill for the Devils before being closed out on a 25-18 final score and a 3-1 overall match score.

FDU-Florham looks to host their first MAC Freedom contest of the year against Stevens on Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00 pm. The match will be played in support of breast cancer awareness.
