Men’s Basketball Downs Delaware Valley, 71-70

New Britain, PA (January 31) - The FDU-Florham men's basketball (4-16, 1-8 MAC Freedom) team was led by Jaqwan Washington (Bryan, TX) who registered 21 points to help the Devils win their first MAC Freedom Conference game of the season and as they beat Delaware Valley (7-13, 1-7 MAC Freedom), 71-70 on Wednesday night.
 
The Devil's win was also accredited to the play of Christopher Smith (Florham Park, NJ), who tallied 12 points to follow Washington. Carson Woods (Phoenix, AZ), Washington, and Woods led the team defensively, each totaling seven rebounds on the night. Delaware Valley had three of their players reach double-digit points, being led by Dearry Rasheem with 22 points.
 
The Aggies started the matchup with Rasheen Dearry sinking a three-pointer. But that fired up the Devils as they went on a 14-4 run early in the first half. This run included baskets from Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ), Woods, Washington, and Smith. After a back-and-forth battle, FDU jumped to a 30-15 lead after a a nine-point run for FDU that included seven baskets from Washington. For the remainder of the first half, the Devils kept their lead seeing more baskets from Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ), Andrew Piombino Jr. (Rockaway, NJ), Joseph Carney (Garwood, NJ), and Smith. The Devils went into halftime at a 44-32 advantage.
 
Delaware Valley opened the second half with eight unanswered points to make the score 44-40. The Devils then went on to a 13-8 run with baskets from Micah Moore (West Orange, NJ), Santana, and Piombino. This run allowed Fairleigh Dickinson to extend their lead to the score 57-48, but FDU did not stop there. Later in the second half, the Devils went on a 10-2 run to make the score 71-61. During that run eight of those points were scored by Washington. Despite Delaware Valley scoring nine unanswered points to end the game, FDU came out on top winning 71-70
 
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 50.9 percent (28 for 55) from the floor, 50 percent (4 for 8) from the three-point range, and 64.7 percent (11 for 17) from the free-throw line. The Devils tallied 42 points in the paint, 26 points off the bench, and 11 points off turnovers.
 
Delaware Valley shot 40 percent (24 for 60) from the floor, 25 percent (8 for 32) from the three-point range, and 70 percent (14 for 20) from the free-throw line. They totaled 28 points in the paint, 30 points off the bench, and 14 points off turnovers.
 
FDU-Florham stays on the road for their next contest as they travel to MAC Freedom opponent DeSales on Saturday, February 3rd. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
