Madison, N.J. (January 27) – The FDU-Florham (3-15, 0-7 MAC Freedom) men's basketball team put up a fight against King's (12-8, 4-5 MAC Freedom) on Saturday afternoon. However, the Monarchs were able to find the upper hand against the Devils in the final seconds of the game with a score of 76-74.
The Devils offense was led by
Carson Woods (Phoenix, AZ) who had 18 points followed by
Jaqwan Washington (Bryan, Texas) with 11.
Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ) led the Devils in rebounds totaling nine on the night. The Monarchs saw two players reach double-digit points. They were led by Chris Patton who notched 33.
King's started the matchup off by sinking a three-pointer a minute into the game. But the Devils answered back with two back-to-back free throws from Woods and a three-pointer from Smith to take the lead 5-3 at the 17:29 minute mark. Shortly after, the Monarchs tied the game and took back their lead 7-5. Both teams continued to exchange baskets until the Devils saw a 13-5 to make the score 27-24. This run is credited to Woods, Smith, Nichols,
Michael Dabas (Middletown, NJ), and
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ). After that, the Monarchs went on a 9-5 run that ended the half with a buzzer-beater jump shot to tie the game 33-33 going into halftime.
The Devils went into the first half on a roll as they went on a 13-8 run that ended at the 15:12 mark to take the lead 46-41. During the run the Devils saw more baskets from Washington, Woods, and
Ethan Klueh (Orlando, FL). However, the Monarchs were able to catch up as they took the lead 53-50 after a 9-2 run with 10:40 left in the second half. At the 7:57 mark,
Joseph Carney (Garwood, NJ) sank a three-pointer that tied the game 55-55 which was followed by a jumper from King's, but after that, Nichols also shot a three-pointer to take back the Devils lead 58-57. Again, the Monarchs and the Devils both exchanged baskets in the second half. However, King's was eventually able to pull out a 76-74 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 46.2 percent (24 of 52) from the floor, 37.5 percent (9 of 24) from the three-point range, and 70.8 percent (17 of 24) from the free-throw line. The Devils tallied 30 points in the paint, 21 points off the bench, and seven fast break points.
King's shot 44.6 percent (25 of 56) from the floor, 35 percent (7 of 20) from the three-point range, and 70.4 percent (19 of 27) from the free-throw line. They totaled 28 points in the paint, 20 points off the bench, and 12 points off turnovers.
FDU-Florham is set to travel to MAC Freedom opponent, Delaware Valley, on Wednesday, January 31. This contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
