Hoboken, NJ (January 20) – In Saturday Afternoon MAC Freedom action, The FDU-Florham Women's Basketball team visited Stevens Institute of Technology and fell to the Ducks, 72-48, within the final seconds of the game.
FDU-Florham (9-7, 2-4 MAC Freedom) was led by current MAC Freedom leading scorer,
Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, NJ), as she added another 20 points and 11 rebounds to her total.
Shannon Tighe (Wayne, NJ) helped the Devils as well with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Stevens (8-9-6, 3-3 MAC Freedom) credited 17 points and 4 rebounds to Leyla Castro.
After tying the game with the first 30 seconds, the Ducks tried to create a lead but the Devils remained with site as the game was tied once again, 10-10, at the 4:51 minute timestamp. FDU-Florham was able to hold control of the score until the final seconds of the first quarter, when Stevens went up 18-17 on a free throw.
Stevens controlled much of the second quarter as the Devils tied the game with a three-point field goal from
Julia Vazquez (Bound Brooke, NJ) at the 3:39 minute mark, 29-29. Both teams played on the defensive side as both teams only scored four more points before the half ended with a score of 33-33.
Coming out of halftime, the Devils turned up the heat as they held the point advantage through the first eight minutes of the third quarter. Stevens came within one point of FDU-Florham at the 2:30 minute mark after a made layup, 41-40. The Devils were able to regain a slight lead of six points but lost it in the last seconds, 48-48, of the third quarter.
The Devils fought hard within the last ten minutes of play as they saw nine points as their largest deficit of the game. With 4:29 remaining on the clock,
Aguilar's free throws started a 12-4 run and eventually gained back the lead off a jumper, 66-65.
In the final 30 seconds of the game, FDU remained within one point until a jumper and free throws from Stevens secured the Ducks victory and handed the Devils a 72-68 loss.
FDU-Florham shot 43.6-percent (24-for-55) from the floor, 42.9-percent (6-for-14) from three-point range and 73.7-percent (14-for-19) from the free throw line, while Stevens shot 36.5-percent (27-for-74) from the floor, 28.6-percent (4-for-14) from three point range and 73.7-percent (14-for-19) from the free throw line.
Stevens scored 36 points in the paint, 28 bench points and converted 22 points off FDU-Florham's turnovers.
The Devils will remain on the road and travel to Arcadia for a 7pm MAC Freedom on Wednesday, January 24.
