Madison, NJ (February 4) – Wilkes University rallied from a 14 point halftime deficit to defeat the FDU-Florham men's basketball team, 78-71, in MAC Freedom action inside the Ferguson Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
FDU-Florham (3-19, 2-11 MAC Freedom) saw four student-athletes score double digit points highlighted by a 19 point performance by
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) Woods added four rebounds, five assists and three steals to his line today.
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ) tallied 18 points, two steals, five assists and one rebound, while
Aidan Newman (Gainesville, Fla.) posted 12 points and two rebounds for the Devils.
Matthew Johnson (Oak Ridge, NJ) came up one rebound shy of a double double as he posted ten points and nine boards.
Zachary Gula led Wilkes (11-10, 6-6 MAC Freedom) with 22 points off the bench, while Lucas Lesko and Joey Zvorsky both added 16 points for the visitors.
The Devils trailed 22-14 following a layup by Zvorsky with 10:32 to play in the first half. FDU-Florham went on a 26-4 run over the final ten minutes of the opening half and took a 40-26 lead into the break. Woods registered eight of FDU-Florham's 26 points over the stretch, while Santana, Newman,
Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ) and Johnson accounted for the rest.
Wilkes trailed by 13 points early in the second before the Colonels ripped off a 15-2 run to tie the score up at 53-53 with 8:32 to play in regulation. After a jumper by Johnson ended the run, Wilkes continued its scoring barrage with another 12-2 run for a 65-57 advantage with four minutes left on the clock.
Wilkes eventually took a ten point lead and knocked down its free throws down the stretch for the 78-71 road win over FDU-Florham.
FDU-Florham shot 49.0-percent (25-for-51) from the floor, 36.0-percent (9-for-25) from three point range and 80.0-percent (12-for-15) from the free throw line. The Devils scored 32 points in the paint, 16 fast break points and 13 points off turnovers.
Wilkes shot 45.9-percent (28-for-61) from the floor, 34.8-percent (8-for-23) from behind the arc and 77.8-percent (14-for-18) from the free throw line. Wilkes scored 34 points in the paint, 27 points off the bench and 17 points off turnovers.
FDU-Florham will have a week off before returning to MAC Freedom play with a road game at Lycoming College next Saturday, February 11 at 3:00 pm.
