Hoboken, NJ (February 1) – FDU-Florham junior
Matthew Johnson (Oak Ridge, NJ) produced his second double double of the season tonight against Stevens Institute of Technology in MAC Freedom action, but the Devils fell to the Ducks by a 64-57 final in Canavan Arena.
In addition to Johnson's double double, FDU-Florham (3-18, 2-10 MAC Freedom) saw
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) contribute seven points, a career-high 11 assists, four steals and nine boards to the effort tonight.
Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ) also added nine points and eight rebounds for FDU-Florham.
Stevens (10-11, 7-5 MAC Freedom) was paced by Conor Coffey, who tallied 24 points and five rebounds, while Brett Bischoping registered a 13 point, 10 rebound double double for the Ducks.
The opening 13 minutes of tonight's game was tight and saw the score even on six different occasions. A jumper by Nichols put FDU-Florham ahead 24-23 before Stevens answered with an 11-5 run to close the half ahead by a 34-29 margin.
Stevens maintained its edge throughout the entirety of the second half, but FDU-Florham was able to cut its deficit to just three points following a three point bucket by
Aidan Newman (Gainesville, Fla.) and a jumper by
Michael Dabas (Middletown, NJ) with five minutes to play in regulation. The Ducks answered with a trey of their own and knocked down two buckets and three free throws to secure the win, 64-57.
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 33.8-percent (22-for-65) from the floor, 40.9-percent (9-for-22) from three point range and 57.1-percent (4-for-7) from the free throw line. The Devils produced 24 points in the paint and 13 points off the bench.
Stevens shot 43.1-percent (25-for-58) from the floor, 28.0-percent (7-for-25) from behind the arc and 43.8-percent (7-for-16) from the free throw line. The Ducks tallied 30 points in the paint and eight points off the bench.
FDU-Florham will return to Madison and host Wilkes University on Saturday, February 4 at 3:00 pm in the Ferguson Recreation Center.
