Women's Basketball Squeezes Out a 76-69 Win Over Drew

Madison, NJ (December 16) – After honoring the ten-year anniversary of the 2013-14 National Championship team, The FDU-Florham Women's Basketball team faced cross-town rival, Drew University, in a non-conference meeting and squeezed out a 76-69 victory over the Rangers.

With this win the devils have captured their fifth straight win this season and move to an overall record of 6-3. Drew fell back to an overall record of 3-5 with today's loss.

Neysa Aguilar (Middlesex, NJ) was just shy of a career-high in points as she dropped 29 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in today's contest. Teammates Christina Centeno (Bayonne, NJ) and Gabrielle Walker (Old Bridge, NJ) both added 14 points and combined for 9 rebounds.

After starting the game with a made technical free throw, Drew was able to obtain the tip-off and breakaway for a quick layup to start regulation play. Bringing the ball to the other end of the court the Devils swung the ball around to Centeno and sunk a three pointer to tie the game in the first 20 seconds.

Both teams were able produce defensive stops, but shots would be converted for the score to read 9-9 after a made three-pointer from Aguilar, to help give FDU the momentum to end the first quarter on a 14-6 run, 15-20.

The quarter started with another 9-4 run by the Devils as they were able to keep the pressure from the first quarter. The Rangers were able to swish a three-point shot halfway into the second quarter, which resulted in a spark of momentum to bring Drew only within an eight-point difference to end the half, 39-31.

After knocking down two three-pointers and breaking away for a layup on the fast break, Centeno helped FDU-Florham expand their lead by nine points to start the third quarter. Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter which resulted in a 59-48 score.

It was Drew who owned the first basket of the fourth quarter, after another three-pointer was made to close the difference once again within eight-points. The Rangers were able to close the score even more after as they scored 13 points to close the score at 69-64 with two minutes to play.

FDU-Florham found Aguilar in the short corner for a jumper that helped push the Devils above Drew in the final minutes of the game, securing the 76-69 win over Madison Avenue rivals, The Drew Rangers.

FDU-Florham shot 50.0-percent (26-for-52) from the floor, 44.4-percent (8-for-18) from three point range and 64.0-percent (16-for-25) from the free throw line, while Drew shot 35.0-percent (28-for-80) from the floor, 25.0-percent (4-for-16) from three point range and 69.2-percent (9-for-13) from the free throw line.

The Devils were able to score 24 points in the paint, 15 points of the fast break and 14 points off of Drew's turnovers.

FDU-Florham will play their final game of the 2023 calendar year on Tuesday December 19 against The College of Wooster. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
