Madison, N.J. (October 26) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team (13-13) honored their two seniors
Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, N.J.) and
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, N.J.) in their final home game in the Ferguson Rec Center and each of them led the way for the Devils who downed Medgar Evers (0-17), 3-0 on Thursday night.
Fruscione tied the three-set single-match service ace record that was broken this season by
Gianna Buscarino (Centereach, N.Y.) against the same opponent earlier this season with 17 service aces in the contest. Fruscione also had six kills while DeFuria led the team in kills with nine on the night. Buscarino collected seven assists and seven service aces.
Set 1: The Cougars jumped out to a 3-2 lead before the Devils scored five straight points that included a kill from
Gabbie Hart (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and two service aces from Buscarino led to a 7-3 FDU lead. At the 9-5 score mark, Fairleigh Dickinson scored 11 unanswered points to extend the set lead to 17-5. That run included six service aces from
Charlee Tarlac (Union, N.J.) and a kill from Fruscione. The two teams ping ponged a few points before a 7-0 run closed out set one for FDU 25-7. Fruscione highlighted the run with three kills and two service aces.
Set 2: The two teams exchanged a point before the Devils hammered down a clean 24-0 run to take set two, 25-1. 14 of Fruscione's 17 service aces came in that run while DeFuria knocked down five kills.
Set 3: Fruscione tied the record in the first three points for FDU but a low serve that hit the net kept the record shared with Buscarino and made the score 3-1 Devils. It was a 7-2 lead for FDU before they another huge run, this time with 12 points for a lead of 20-2. That run included five service aces from Buscarino, three kills from DeFuria, and a kill from
Emma Robinson (Cedar Park, Texas). The Cougars scored three straight points before the Devils closed out the match with five unanswered. Robinson found another kill and Fruscione collected a pair of kills including the match-sealing hit to complete the sweep with a 25-5 set win.
Post season aspirations hang in the balance for FDU-Florham next Wednesday as they travel for their final regular season match of the season and square off with King's (Pa.) on November 1 at 7:00 pm.
