Madison, NJ. (January 7) – The FDU-Florham men's basketball team hosted fellow MAC Freedom opponent Lycoming University, which resulted in a 69-65 loss for the Devils on Saturday afternoon.
FDU-Florham dropped to 2-12 overall and to 1-5 in MAC Freedom play, while Lycoming improved to 8-6 overall and to 3-2 in the league.
The Devils had four players score in the double digits in today's contest.
Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ) and
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) both totaled fifteen points and one rebound, while Woods added three assists. Junior
Michael Dabas (Middletown, NJ) and sophomore
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ) both registered twelve points. Dabas collected four rebounds and one assist, while Santana snatched six rebounds and three assists. Lycoming's Isaiah Valentine recorded fourteen points and nine rebounds for the Warriors.
Nichols made the first points of the game for the Devils on a three point field goal assisted by Dabas on the opening possession for FDU-Florham. As the game continued into the first half, the Warriors proceeded to knock down shots to make the score 16-9 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Dabas contributed 10 points in the first half for the Devils.
FDU-Florham came out in the second half ready to chip away at the scoreboard. Woods started the momentum slowly by converting on both his free throws
. Nichols and Dabas added a jumper to take the score to 47-37. With the momentum flowing, the Devils were able to go on a 10-0 run to tie the game 47-47 with 11:15 to play.
Both teams upped the score to 63-63 with 1:47 remaining in the game. A three pointer by Lycoming's Steven Hamilton and a free throw by J.J. Beagle pushed the Warriors out in front, 67-63. A quick transition jumper from Woods was thought to be the basket that gave the Devils the momentum they needed, but unfortunately, the Devils fell just short in the 69-65 setback.
FDU-Florham shot 38.6-percent (22-for-57) from the floor, 50.0-percent (10-for-20) from three point range and 68.8-percent (11-for-16) from the free throw line, while Lycoming shot 43.9-percent (25-for-57) from the floor, 33.3-percent (9-for-27) from three point range and 58.8-percent (10-17) from the free throw line.
Lycoming scored 26 points in the paint, six points off FDU-Florham turnovers and 29 points off the bench.
FDU-Florham will take a trip to Brooklyn, NY to face Pratt on Wednesday, January 11. Tip-off will occur at 5:00pm for the non-conference matchup.
