Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (January 4) – King's College men's basketball held off a second half surge from FDU-Florham as the Monarchs defeated the Devils by a 79-67 final on Wednesday evening inside McGrane Gymnasium.
FDU-Florham (2-11, 1-4 MAC Freedom) was led by
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.), who posted a career-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists.
Michael Dabas (Middletown, NJ) added 16 points, a pair of rebounds and two blocks, while
Brian Nichols (Roxbury, NJ) tallied a career-high 12 rebounds and dished out three assists in the effort for the Devils.
King's (5-7, 1-4 MAC Freedom) was guided by Will Johnson, who registered a game-high 24 points, while Eamonn Walsh and Chris Patton tallied 18 and 17 points, respectively. Johnson added seven rebounds and four steals to his stat line tonight.
The Devils jumped out to an early 4-3 edge before the Monarchs went on a 16-5 run for a ten point advantage at 19-9 about eight minutes into the contest. King's was able to build its lead to as many as 19 points at 36-17 before the hosts went into the halftime break up by 13 at 40-27 following a brief 10-4 spurt by the Devils that was sparked by four points from the stripe by
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ).
FDU-Florham trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half, but never gave up as a huge 20-5 run over a span of six minutes cut its deficit to just five points following a trey by Dabas. That was as close as FDU-Florham would get as King's secured the win with eight made free throws and a pair of baskets to account for the 79-67 road final.
As a team, FDU-Florham shot 41.7-percent (20-for-41) from the floor, 32.1-percent (9-for-28) from three point range and 69.2-percent (18-for-26) from the free throw line. The Devils 22 points in the paint, eight points off turnovers and 13 points off the bench.
King's College shot 42.4-percent (28-for-66) from the floor, 26.7-percent (4-for-15) from three point range and 79.2-percent (19-for-24) from the free throw line. The Monarchs posted 40 of their 79 points in the paint, registered eight steals, and tallied nine fastbreak points.
FDU-Florham will return home on Saturday, January 7 for another MAC Freedom matchup with Lycoming College at 3:00 pm.
