Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Sarah Lawrence, 3-1

Madison, NJ (September 1) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team fell to Sarah Lawrence College, 3-1, by set scores of 27-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20 on Thursday evening inside of the Ferguson Recreation Center.
 
Devils first-year Gabbie Hart (Cherry Hill, NJ) with a double-double in her collegiate debut as she tallied a team-high 14 kills and ten digs. Sophomore Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ) registered 12 kills and 19 digs for her first double-double of the year. Sarah Lawrence was guided by Davis Mathis, who notched 11kills on 40 swings, while Kaille Ferguson tallied 33 digs in the four set victory.
 
Set 1: The Devils raced out to a 13-7 advantage following a 6-0 run that featured back-to-back aces by Hart. Late in the stanza, Sarah Lawrence trailed 23-21, but a pair of kills paired with an FDU error gave the visitors a 24-23 edge. Athena Kazos registered an ace to give Sarah Lawrence a 27-25 set one win.
 
Set 2: FDU once again held an early lead in the second set, this time at 15-10 following a service error by the visitors. Sarah Lawrence, however, ripped off a 9-2 for a 19-17 edge. Tied at 21, the Gryphons scored four of the final five points for a 25-22 set two victory that was capped by a kill from Mathis.
 
Set 3: The Devils bounced back for a set three victory that was highlighted by a 9-1 run with the scored knotted at 16-16. The set-ending run was sparked by Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ), who registered three aces and a kill, as well as Hart, who swung for three kills.
 
Set 4: Sarah Lawrence led the fourth and final set from start to finish. The Gryphons won the final set by a 25-20 score and the match, 3-1.
 
Sarah Lawrence led statistically in kills (48-41), assists (45-41) and digs (90-79), while the Devils led in aces (8-7) and blocks (6-2).
 
FDU-Florham is currently running a campaign in honor of former Devils men's basketball head coach, men's golf coach and athletic director Roger Kindel.
 
All donations will go directly towards funding a complete renovation of the basketball and volleyball court inside the Ferguson Recreation Center with his name dawned on both sides.
