Madison, NJ (April 6) – After a tight opening quarter, DeSales University scored nine unanswered goals to pull away for a 16-6 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win over FDU-Florham in men's lacrosse action on Robert T. Shields Field tonight.
MacGyver Hay (Mays Landing, NJ) led FDU-Florham (3-6, 1-1 MAC Freedom) with eight ground balls and a single game program record nine caused turnovers, while
Michael Stewart (Narbeth, Pa.) the Devils with three goals in the effort.
DeSales (5-4, 1-1 MAC Freedom) was guided by three goals and seven assists by Zach Bowen as well as four goals and two assists by Pat Schuett. Schuett also led the Bulldogs with five ground balls in the victory.
After DeSales opened the game with three straight goals, the Devils ended the first quarter with three straight of their own for a 3-3 tie through 15 minutes of action.
Lucas Berghahn (Poughkeepsie, NY), M. Stewart and
Brian Stewart (Narbeth, Pa.) all scored for FDU in the run.
DeSales outscored FDU 7-0 in the second and 5-1 in third to pull away for the road victory. Over the course of the run, Bowen tallied three goals and four assists to guide the Bulldogs. At the end of the game, M. Stewart tallied back-to-back goals for FDU to account for the 16-6 final.
As a team, DeSales outshot FDU, 49-28, and held a 50-34 advantage in ground balls. The Bulldogs also won 20-of-26 faceoffs at the "X". FDU went 18-for-30 on the clear, while DeSales went 19-for-24 in transition.
Dan Schlupp (Holland, Pa.) made 11 saves in goal for FDU-Florham, while three goaltenders for DeSales combined for ten saves over the course of 60 minutes tonight.
FDU will travel to Lycoming College on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 pm for another MAC Freedom matchup in its next contest.
