Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (April 2) – Paced by four goals by
Drew Gallagher (Shamong, NJ), the FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team defeated Wilkes University, 11-9, in the Devils 2022 MAC Freedom opener this afternoon on the road.
FDU-Florham (3-5, 1-0 MAC Freedom) received four goals by Gallagher and a hat trick from
Zane Johnston (Ridley, Pa.) in the victory, while
Trevor Arnone (Poughkeepsie, NY) won ten faceoffs on the day. Defensively,
MacGyver Hay (Mays Landing, NJ) tallied a game-high six ground balls.
Wilkes (4-7, 0-2 MAC Freedom) was paced by Alex Meyers with four goals and a hat trick by Eric Ormsby in the set back.
Both teams scored twice in the opening quarter before FDU took what turned out to be the lead for good early in the second on a goal by Gallagher off a pass by
Lucas Berghahn (Poughkeepsie, NY). The Devils took a 6-3 lead into the halftime break.
Wilkes outscored the Devils, 6-5, in the second half, but FDU maintained its edge thanks to late goals by
Brian Stewart (Narbeth, NJ) and two goals in the third by Gallagher.
As a team, FDU held a 36-34 edge in shots and went 21-for-23 on the clear. Wilkes posted a 32-26 advantage in ground balls and won 12-of-22 faceoffs on the day.
In goal,
Dan Schlupp (Holland, Pa.) made ten saves and earned the win for the Devils, while Wilkes keeper Ryan Lasher took the loss with 11 stops for the hosts.
FDU will play its first MAC Freedom home game of the season on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:00 pm against DeSales University.
