Madison, NJ (March 5) – The FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team fell to crosstown rival Drew University, 15-9, in non-conference action at Ranger Stadium in the Battle of Madison Avenue.
FDU-Florham (0-2) was led by
Zane Johnston (Ridley, Pa.), who posted four goals and three assists for seven points as well as five ground balls and a caused turnover, while
Ricky Lewis (Washington, NJ) added five ground balls.
Drew (4-1) was guided Craig Wilkie with four goals, two assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Mike DeMayo added three goals and a ground ball for the Rangers in the victory.
The Rangers raced out to a 6-2 advantage over the first 18 minutes of the game as six different Drew student-athletes found the back of the net over the stretch. FDU's goals came from
Drew Gallagher (Shamong, NJ) and
Lucas Berghahn (Poughkeepsie, NJ).
FDU was able to pull even with Drew at 7-7 by scoring five of the next six goals, three of which came from Johnston before the halftime break. Brian Windisch scored for the Rangers with 27 ticks left on the clock in the second quarter as Drew led by a slim 8-7 margin after 30 minutes of action.
Drew outscored FDU 7-2 in the second half and scored once on the man-advantage to account for the 15-9 victory. The Devils had five chances on the man-advantage in the second half but could not find the back of the net. FDU's second half goals came from Berghahn and Johnston.
Travis Arnone (Poughkeepsie, NY) won 10-of-26 faceoffs for the Devils. As a team, FDU held a slim 45-39 advantage in shots, a 37-36 differential in ground balls and went 10-for-18 on clearing attempts. Drew went 13-for-19 on the clear.
Drew keeper Jeremy Gottlieb picked up the win with 16 saves over the first 58:56 of the game, while FDU first-year
Dalton Povilaitis (Jefferson, NJ) made his collegiate debut and made nine saves in 45 minutes of relief today.
FDU will travel to Montclair State University on Saturday, March 12 at 3:00 pm for a non-conference contest against the Red Hawks.
