Madison, NJ (March 2) – In its 2022 season opener, the FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team fell to Kean University by a 14-4 final tonight on Robert T. Shields Field.
FDU-Florham (0-1) was offensively paced by
Drew Gallagher (Shamong, NJ) with two goals, while defensively,
MacGyver Hay (Mays Landing, NJ) tallied a team-high six ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.
Zane Johnston (Ridley, Pa.) also contributed one goal, two assists and two ground balls.
Kean (1-0) received three goals and three assists from Anthony Porter, three goals from Brady Moore and a game-high 12 ground balls from Nick Moffa. Moffa also went 19-for-22 at the faceoff X.
The Cougars led 3-0 after the opening quarter before
Michael Stewart (Narbeth, Pa.) scored FDU's first goal of the season on the man-advantage three minutes into the second quarter. The Devils pulled within two goals before the break as back-to-back scores by Johnston and Gallagher made the score 5-3. Moore added one for the Cougars as the visitors held a 6-3 edge at the break.
Gallagher scored FDU's lone goal of the second half 2:04 into the third quarter before Kean scored the final eight goals of the game to account for the 14-4 final.
As a team, Kean led statistically in shots (52-30) and ground balls (36-25). FDU went 21-for-24 in transition and scored twice on the man-advantage, while the Cougars won 19-of-22 faceoffs on the night.
In net, Thomas Francy (1-0) earned the win with 13 saves for the Cougars, while
Dan Schlupp (Holland, Pa.)made 17 saves for the hosts in the effort.
FDU will travel down Madison Avenue for a non-conference game at Drew University on Saturday, March 5 at 3:00 pm.
