Center Valley, Pa. (October 31) – The fifth-seeded FDU-Florham volleyball team fell to fourth-seeded DeSales University, 3-0, by set scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-21, in the opening round of the 2022 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Tournament tonight on the road.
FDU-Florham, now 13-11 overall, will await word of a potential berth to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament, while DeSales (18-13), will advance to the MAC Freedom Semifinals and play at top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, November 2.
Vanessa Freeman (Piscataway, NJ) once again led the Devils offensively with seven kills, while both
Jada Everett (Hackensack, NJ) and
Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif.) posted five kills apiece in the effort. Defensively,
Julia Hudson (Bel Air, Md.) registered 13 digs and
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) had 12 digs.
Set 1: The opening set was tied on 14 different occasions with the final time coming at 18-18. FDU-Florham held a 18-16 edge following a kill from Fruscione, but DeSales went on a 9-1 set ending run to take the opening stanza 25-19.
Set 2: Both teams traded points to open the second set as the score was knotted at 3-3. A Devils error gave DeSales a 4-3 edge and they never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the set. The Bulldogs pulled away with a 6-1 run midway through before a swing by Grace Grandinetti gave DeSales a 25-17 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3: Tied at 12-12 following a kill from Reiter, DeSales used a brief 5-1 run to go ahead by a 17-13 margin and never look back. The Bulldogs maintained their lead as the hosts won the set 25-21 and the match, 3-0.
