Volleyball Scores 3-2 Senior Night Victory Over Marywood

Madison, NJ (October 20) – FDU-Florham first-year Vanessa Freeman (Piscataway, NJ) broke the single match five set record for most aces with 12 in tonight's 3-2 non-conference victory over Marywood University. The Devils won by set scores of 25-22, 18-25, 19-25, 27-25, 15-5.

In addition, prior to the match, FDU-Florham (9-9) honored graduate student Kacie Ros (Bridgewater, NJ) for her contributions towards the Devils volleyball program over the past five years.

Freeman's 12 aces tonight are the most for a single student-athlete in Division III women's volleyball this year in a five-set match and third most individual total in any match in 2022. Freeman's 12 aces broke the five set FDU-Florham single match record that was set by Rachel Catena in 2014 against Hunter (7) and tied the single match program record for any match length with Nicole Weissert from 2010 against Manhattanville.

FDU-Florham sophomore Jada Everett (Hackensack, NJ) registered a career-high 12 kills, while Freeman also tallied a career-high 16 digs tonight in addition to her four kills and 12 aces. Tonight, first-year Gabbie Hart (Cherry Hill, NJ) and junior Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) both notched ten kills apiece.

Marywood (11-13) was paced by 21 kills from Casey Hagerstrom as well as 29 digs from Sydney Steiner. Libby Smith (12 kills, 19 digs) and Shannon Corr (14 kills, 14 digs) both posted double-doubles for the Pacers in the setback.

Set 1: FDU-Florham jumped out to a 9-2 advantage following a kill by Hart, however midway through the stanza Marywood was able to knot the match at both 18-18 and 21-21. The Devils did not allow the Pacers to take a lead in the first set and ended with a 4-1 run on a pair of errors by Marywood as well as kills by both Fruscione and Hart to win it 25-21.

Set 2: Marywood trailed 5-1 early before going on a 12-3 run for a 13-8 edge. FDU-Florham was able to cut its deficit to just three at 17-14, but the Pacers maintained its edge and used a pair of Devils errors to win the second, 25-18.

Set 3: The third set was knotted at 18-18 following a kill by Everett and a Marywood error, but the Pacers ripped off a 7-1 set ending run to win the third, 25-19, and to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Set 4: The fourth set needed extra points and knotted at 25-25, the Devils received back-to-back kills by Fruscione and Ros for the 27-25 win and to set the match into a decisive fifth set. Up to that point in the match, FDU outhit Marywood in a set and had a match-high 13 kills in the fourth.

Set 5: Marywood took a quick 2-1 edge in the fifth, but FDU-Florham ripped off 12 consecutive points, six of which came on service aces by Freeman. A kill by Everett and a kill by Fruscione gave FDU-Florham the fifth set, 15-5, and the match, 3-2. The Devils hit a scorching .462 (7-1-13) in the fifth set.

FDU-Florham will have the weekend off before wrapping its regular season up with five matches next week. The Devils will head to John Jay for a non-conference contest on Monday, October 24 at 6:00 pm to start its final week of the regular season.
