Madison, NJ (January 8) – The King's College (Pa.) men's basketball team outscored FDU-Florham, 19-8, in overtime to earn an 89-78 victory over the Devils on Saturday afternoon in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) matchup in the Ferguson Recreation Center.
FDU (3-9, 0-5 MAC Freedom) saw three student-athletes post double digit point totals which included 19 points by
Gerard Nicholson (Staten Island, NY) and 15 points from both
Michael Dabas (Middletown, NJ)and
Aidan Newman (Gainesville, Fla.).
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) guided the Devils with 14 rebounds in the effort.
King's (6-6, 2-2 MAC Freedom) received a 32 point, 15 rebound double double from Patrick Bennie as well as a 12 point, 12 rebound double double from Peri Basimakopoulos.
The first half was tightly contested as the point spread between FDU and King's never reached higher than eight points. The Devils took their first lead in the game with 4:22 to play in the first half at 30-29 following a three pointer by
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ), but the Monarchs put together a 10-1 run to close the first half up 39-31. Five of the final ten points for King's came as free throws with a little more than a minute to play before the break.
FDU trailed by 12 points early in the second at 43-31, but scored 11 straight and put together a 16-3 run for a 47-46 edge. The spurt featured nine points from Newman, three from Nicholson, two from
Oliver Ortman (North Caldwell, NJ) and two from
Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, NJ) to cut its deficit to one.
The Devils took their largest lead of the game of five points with 8:10 to play in regulation (59-55) following a three pointer by Santana, but once against the Monarchs answered with a 9-0 run to regain the edge. Converted free throws by both teams down the stretch forced the overtime session. Dabas hit two shots from the stripe for FDU with 16 seconds to play, but of a timeout Basimakopoulos had a chance to win it for the visitors. His shot from behind the arc missed the rim and sent the game into extra time.
FDU took a 72-71 edge less than a minute into OT, but King's scored 11 straight for the 82-72 advantage which was a large enough gap to hold off the Devils. The Monarchs hit their free throws and won the league game by an 89-78 final on Saturday afternoon.
As a team, FDU shot 32.9-percent (25-for-76) from the floor, 27.6-percent (16-for-58) from behind the arc and 85.7-percent (12-for-14) from the free throw line. The Devils scored 16 points in the paint and nine off of turnovers. King's scored 38 of its 89 points from in the paint, scored ten off of FDU turnovers and 18 off of fast break opportunities.
FDU is scheduled to travel to Arcadia University for another MAC Freedom contest on Wednesday, January 12 at 8:00 pm.
