Bethlehem, Pa. (January 17) – Moravian University overcame a six point halftime deficit to defeat the FDU-Florham men's basketball team, 75-70, in a non-conference contest played inside Johnson Hall on Monday evening. Tonight's game marked FDU's final non-conference regular season matchup of the 2021-22 season.
FDU (3-12) received a team-high 11 points from both
Gerard Nicholson (Staten Island, NY) and
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ), who came off the bench and played 28 minutes for the Devils.
Miles Crystian (Red Bank, NJ) led the way for FDU with eight rebounds and three blocks on the night. Moravian (7-7) saw four of its starters post double digit points highlighted by an 18 point, seven rebound effort by Alex Dietz.
Moravian hit seven of its first 11 shots tonight over the first 3:34 of the game for an early 16-4 lead. The early run was capped by a dunk off a stela by Antonio Montgomery and a jumper by Dietz. FDU answered, however, with a 22-2 run that lasted nearly eight minutes to go ahead by a 25-18 score. The run for the Devils, which saw 20 consecutive points scored by the visitors, was sparked by six points from Santana as well as four points from both Nicholson and
Michael Morrissey (Pearl River, NY).
FDU maintained its first half lead and led by as many as 11 at 41-30 following a three point shot by Walsh before Moravian scored five straight ending the half with a score of 41-35 in favor of the Devils.
Moravian opened the second half similar to the way it did in the first with a big run. This time the hosts posted a 14-3 run that lasted five minutes as the Greyhounds retook the lead at 49-44, a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
FDU trailed by ten with seven minutes to play and ripped off a 10-2 run that saw
Aidan Newman (Gainesville, Fla.) knock down three shots, two from behind the arc, making it a one possession game. Nicholson ended the run with two shots from the charity stripe as the score stood at 62-60 with 4:39 left on the clock.
The Greyhounds held off the late rally by the Devils and secured the win with a three pointer by Nate Dougherty as time expired on the shot clock and a trio of free throws from Dietz.
FDU shot 46.6-percent from the floor (27-for-58), 30.0-percent (6-for-20) from behind the arc and 66.7-percent (10-for-15) from the free throw line. The Devils scored 42 of their 70 points in the paint, 14 points off of Moravian turnovers and saw 30 points scored off the bench.
Moravian shot 47.6-percent (30-for-63) from the floor, 42.1-percent (8-for-19) from three point range and 70.0-percent (7-for-10) from the free throw line. The hosts scored 34 of their 75 points in the paint and 18 points off of FDU turnovers.
The hosts held a slight 36-32 edge in rebounds, however, the Devils posted a 10-7 differential in steals and a 5-3 margin in blocks.
FDU will travel to Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, January 19 for its next conference game. Tip off is slated for 8:00 pm in Hoboken, NJ.
