Madison, NJ (January 15) – First-year
Carson Woods (Phoenix, Ariz.) registered his first career double double (10 points, 10 rebounds) this afternoon, but the FDU-Florham men's basketball team dropped a 67-56 decision to Misericordia University in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) matchup inside the Ferguson Recreation Center.
Three Devils posted double digit point totals today which included ten from Woods, 12 from
Michael Dabas (Middletown, NJ) and ten from
Miles Crystian (Red Bank, NJ). Dabas added two steals, two rebounds and two blocks to his stat line for FDU-Florham (3-11, 0-7 MAC Freedom), while Crystian tallied five rebounds in addition to his ten points.
Misericordia (5-9, 4-3 MAC Freedom) was led by Nick Hornung, who registered 17 points on 7-for-8 shooting, four rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes off the bench. Elijah Rosenthal added ten points, four rebounds and two assists for the visiting Cougars.
FDU raced out to a 23-10 advantage over the first 7:46 of the game as the Devils hit 9 of their first 13 shots for its largest lead of today's contest. FDU saw seven different student-athletes score over the game opening run. The run was capped by a three pointer by
Jamal Santana (Randolph, NJ) and the Devils were led by five points from Dabas over the course of the run.
Misericordia answered and cut its deficit to just two points at 31-29 over the next ten minutes as a layup by Rodrigo Vani capped the run. The visitors trailed by five at the break, 35-30.
Misericordia tied the game at 35-35 and took its first lead of the game at 40-39 five minutes into the second half. Two free throws by Woods gave FDU a 41-40 edge, but the Cougars scored nine straight points for a 49-41 lead and never relinquished their advantage en route to the 67-56 victory.
As a team, FDU shot 34.4-percent (21-for-61) from the floor, 13.6-percent (3-for-22) from behind the arc and 91.7-percent (11-for-12) from the free throw line. The Devils scored 36 of their 56 points in the paint and 13 points off of Misericordia turnovers. The Cougars shot 46.4-percent (26-for-56) from the floor, 27.8-percent (5-for-18) from behind the arc and 66.7-percent (10-for-15) from the free throw line.
FDU will step out of league play on Monday, January 17 with a 7:00 pm game at Moravian University.
