HISTORY MADE! FDU Men's Soccer Defeats Rival Drew For First Time in Program History!

Madison, NJ (September 4) – For the first time in program history, the FDU-Florham men's soccer team defeated crosstown rival Drew University. Tonight, in the opening game of the Drew Fall Festival, the Devils came from behind to beat the Rangers by a 3-2 final. The win secures a spot for FDU in the Fall Festival Championship game tomorrow evening against No. 15 Rowan University.

Records: FDU (1-0-1); Drew (0-1-0)
Location: Ranger Stadium
FDU Goal Scorers: Ricky La Stella (2), Sam Allington (1), FDU Own Goal (Team)

First Half:
  • The opening half was full of action as both squads scored two goals. Drew registered the first goal of the game in the 17th minute when Brandon Jimenez headed the ball into the net off a cross from Modesto Nogueira.

  • The Devils answered just seven minutes later when Ricky La Stella finished a cross from the left side by Brandon McGregor into the right corner of the net. Exactly four minute after their first goal, the Devils struck again after Sam Allington (London, England) ripped a shot off a feed from Jack Montanile (Toms River, NJ).

  • Drew knotted the game at 2-2 in the 34th minute on a goal by Lucas Portadin.
Second Half:
  • FDU took advantage of a mistake by Drew in the 62nd minute for its third goal of the game, a goal which proved to be the game winner. FDU was awarded a corner kick and La Stella blasted the ball into the box. McGregor put a shot on goal but it deflected off of a Drew defender and found the back of the net.

  • From that point on, FDU keeper Tiernan Grey (Staten Island, NY) made a pair of saves to preserve the historic 3-2 win for the Devils.
Inside the Box Score:
  • Drew held a 22-4 advantage in shots but all four shots FDU took were on net and three of them crossed the goal line. Grey was a crucial piece of FDU's win as he made seven saves for the Devils.

  • The all-time series with Drew (that we have record of) dates back to 1986. This is the first time that FDU was able to defeat the Rangers.

FDU will play No. 15 Rowan University in the championship game of the Drew Fall Festival tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm.
