Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (September 28) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team dropped its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) matchup on the road tonight at King's College (Pa.) in four sets, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 25-12.
The loss droped FDU's record to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in MAC Freedom play, while King's lifted its mark to 11-1 and 2-1 in the league.
The opening set was decided by two runs by King's. FDU led midway through the first at 13-11 following a kill by
Sophia Miskulin (New Providence, NJ), but King's went on a 9-2 run for the 20-15 advantage. The Devils cut their deficit to one at 20-19 after an ace by
Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ), but once again King's responded and scored five of the final points in the set for the early edge.
The second set was knotted at 16-16 before FDU went on a 9-1 run to win the set 25-17 and to tie the match up at 1-1. The late rally featured two aces by both
Jessica Garreffa (Chatham, NJ) and
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) as well as single kills by DeFuria and
Abigail Rock (Stewartsville, NJ).
FDU trailed 23-19 in set number three but scored three straight on an error by King's, a block by Miskulin and an ace by
Erin Ahart (Kennelon, NJ). It was the hosts, however, who took the third set 25-22 after back-to-back kills.
A big run early by King's in the fourth set was the difference as the hosts jumped out to an 8-3 lead and never looked back. King's won the set 25-12 and the match 3-1.
FDU's offense was evenly spread out as six different Devils registered at least six kills in the match. Ahart continued her success on the service line as she tallied a match-high four aces. On the defensive side of the ball Garreffa notched 18 digs and Fruscione registered 12 digs.
The Devils will travel to Gwynedd Mercy University for a tri match on Saturday, October 2. FDU will play Penn State Abington at 12:00 pm and the host Griffins at 2:00 pm
