Mahwah, NJ (September 26) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team capped its weekend with two wins at the Ramapo College Tournament yesterday afternoon. The Devils defeated Mount Saint Mary's in five sets (21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-11, 15-8) in the opener and then topped Brooklyn College in four (25-15, 25-23, 20-25, 25-13). With the two non-conference wins, FDU-Florham pushed its record to 7-6 this fall.
FDU vs. Mount Saint Mary's
Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ) and
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) both registered double doubles in the opener as DeFuria tallied 15 kills and 22 digs, while Fruscione notched 11 kills and 20 digs.
Rachel Reiter (Riverside, Calif.) also tallied double digit kills with 12 on 25 swings (.360). As a team, the Devils hit .223 and led statistically in kills (63-39), assists (57-39) and digs (96-90).
After dropping the first set, FDU led by one in the second (17-16). The Devils put together a 9-1 run (25-17) knotting the match up a 1-1. Mount Saint Mary's took set three 25-23, but in the fourth FDU jumped out to a huge 19-6 lead and momentum swung in favor of the Devils. A swing by
Sophia Miskulin (New Providence, NJ) gave FDU the fourth 25-11 as the match was decided in a fifth set for the first time this year for the Devils.
In the fifth, Mount Saint Mary's scored the first two points, but FDU answered with a 10-1 run that was highlighted by two aces by
Jessica Garreffa (Chatham, NJ) and two kills by
Abigail Rock (Stewartsville, NJ). Up 13-8, Fruscione and Miskulin tallied back-to-back kills for the 15-8 fifth set win and the overall 3-2 victory.
FDU vs. Brooklyn
As they did against Mount Saint Mary's, DeFuria and Fruscione notched double doubles in the nightcap against Brooklyn. DeFuria tallied 14 kills and 15 digs, while Fruscione notched 13 kills and 18 digs.
Erin Ahart (Kennelon, NJ) tied the single match four set program record with seven aces to go along with 16 digs.
In set number one, FDU led by three at 17-14 and proceeded to go on an 8-1 run to win the opener 25-15. The set ending run featured an ace and kill by DeFuria as well as a kill by
Kacie Ros (Bridgewater, NJ). The second set was knotted at 22-22. Kills by Rock and DeFuria as well as an assisted block by Rock and Miskulin gave FDU a 2-0 lead in the match.
Brooklyn earned a 25-20 win in set three, but FDU answered and closed the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth. The Devils scored the first eight points of the fourth set and led by as many as 15 at 20-5.
FDU will travel to King's College (Pa.) on Tuesday for a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) matchup at 7:00 pm.
