Volleyball Earns First MAC Freedom Win of the Year, 3-1, Over Wilkes

Madison, NJ (September 22) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team picked up its first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win of the 2021 season tonight inside the Ferguson Rec Center as the Devils topped Wilkes University in four sets.

Records: FDU (5-5, 1-3 MAC Freedom); Wilkes (5-6, 1-1 MAC Freedom)
Location: Ferguson Rec Center
FDU Leaders: Adrienne DeFuria (14 kills, 11 digs), Charlotte Fruscione (5 aces), Erin Ahart (18 digs, 18 assists)

Set One:
  • Tied at 20-20 late in the opening set, FDU went on a 4-1 run that featured kills by Erin Ahart (Kennelon, NJ) and Sophia Miskulin (New Providence, NJ) and forced Wilkes to call a timeout. The visitors got a point back immediately out of the break, but a service error by Wilkes gave FDU the first set, 25-21.
Set Two:
  • After FDU scored the first two points of the second set, Wilkes tied the match at 2-2 and never lost the lead the rest of the way. A kill by Jada Everett (Hackensack, NJ) briefly stopped the run by Wilkes, but the visitors scored five of the final six points (25-15) of the set tying the match at 1-1.
Set Three:
  • Wilkes scored the first five points of set three, but FDU immediately fought back and knotted the score up at 5-5. From that point on, the set was tied on four more times. The Devils led by just one at 22-21, but kills by Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ) and Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) paired with a block by Amanda Ciszewski (Wayne, NJ) and Everett gave FDU the set 25-21 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set Four:
  • FDU scored the first six points of the fourth set and went up by as many as seven at 11-4 before Wilkes went on a run of its own (11-1) as the visitors went ahead 15-12. Both teams traded points until the score was knotted at 23 all. An error by Wilkes and a kill by DeFuria secured the fourth set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1, in favor of FDU.
DeFuria tallied 14 kills to go along with 11 digs for another double-double effort for the Devils. Abigail Rock (Stewartsville, NJ) and Fruscione both registered nine kills apiece as the trio accounted for 32 of FDU's 49 kills.

Four Devils tallied double-digit digs led by Ahart who had 18. Jessica Garreffa (Chatham, NJ) had 17 digs, DeFuria had 11 and Fruscione notched ten.

As a team, FDU edged Wilkes in kills (49-37) and assists (45-35), while Wilkes held advantages in aces (13-9), blocks (6-3) and digs (82-80).
