Volleyball Bounces Back With Sweep of Old Westbury

Madison, NJ (September 10) – The Fairleigh Dickinson volleyball team opened its 2021 home schedule tonight with a sweep of SUNY Old Westbury. The Devils won the match by set scores of 25-9, 25-10, 25-21.

Records: FDU (3-2), Old Westbury (0-2)
Location: Ferguson Recreation Center
FDU Leaders: Adrienne DeFuria (10 Kills, 8 digs, 2aces), Rachel Reiter (2 blocks), Kacie Ros (16 assists)

First Set:
  • FDU jumped out to an early 12-3 lead in the opening set and never looked back. The first six FDU points came via two aces by Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ), two kills by Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ) and two kills by Abigail Rock (Stewartsville, NJ). Three straight kills by FDU late in the set forced a timeout by the visitors, but swings by DeFuria and Sophia Miskulin (New Providence, NJ) paired with an ace by Erin Ahart (Kennelon, NJ) gave FDU a 25-9 win in set one.
Second Set:
  • As the Devils did in set one, they ran out to a huge advantage early on. This time FDU scored the first nine points before the visitors got on the board. FDU was up by as many as 14 on three occasions, once off a block by Jada Everett (Hackensack, NJ) and twice off swings by Fruscione. A kill by Miskulin secured set number two, 25-10.
Third Set:
  • Both teams traded points until midway through the third, but the visitors took their largest lead of the match at 14-9. With the score at 18-14 after back-to-back kills by Daesha Garrison, the Devils called a timeout and regrouped. FDU's timeout helped as the hosts went on an 11-3 to close the match out in straight sets.
DeFuria led the way for FDU with ten kills, while Miskulin hit at a .467 clip with eight kills on 15 swings. As a team the Devils led Old Westbury in kills (38-22), aces (9-2), blocks (3-1) and assists (34-22). The visitors edged FDU in digs (52-47).

FDU returns to the court on Monday with a home match at 7:00 pm against Centenary (NJ).
