Women's Lacrosse NCAA Tournament Round 2 Preview

at Washington and Lee, Sunday, May 9 at 2pm

LEXINGTON, VA (May 3, 2021)- The NCAA announced it's second round matchups in the 2021 Women's Lacrosse Tournament, with the Devils drawing Washington and Lee University. FDU finished as the 2021 MAC Freedom Women's Lacrosse Champions with a perfect, 16-0 record, defeating Stevens in the championship game on Saturday, May 1, 15-14. This will be the first matchup in history between these two teams. 

FDU- 16-0, MAC Freedom Champions
FDU comes into this matchup having secured four of five major awards from the MAC Freedom Conference, including, six players selected to the First Team and one selected to the Second Team. The Devils come into the contest averaging 19.0 goals per game, led by sophomore Kylee Garcia (79) and first year Katie Walsh (74). In total, FDU has netted 303 goals compared to allowing only 111, good for a +192 goal deferential. Walsh and fellow first year Aubrey Hunter have controlled the draw, a key aspect to the success of the Devils in 2021. Walsh has twice broken the single game and single season record for draw controls, finishing with 142, and Hunter, the key reason for Walsh's DC success, has collected 84 controls herself. The four headed monster of Garcia, Walsh, Hunter (27) and sophomore Emma Ciquera (37), have combined to score 217 of the teams 303 goals, with all four players finishing with 27 or more goals scored. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Apap completed a perfect 16-0 season in net, earning a Second Team All-Conference selection, making 69 saves on the season for a 6.91 goals against average. 

Washington and Lee- 13-0, ODAC Champions
The Generals finished the 2021 campaign as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Champions for the 11th straight season, dating back to 2010. Washington and Lee is currently the #2 ranked team in the nation and has outscored their opponents a combined 262-62 this season, good for a +200 goal differential. A balanced attack, the Generals have five different scorers who finished the season with 22 or more goals and 11 different players with 11 or more goals, led by first year Hanna Bishop (37) and junior Katherine Faria (36).

From the NCAA
Thirty-three conferences have been awarded automatic qualification for the championship. One team has been selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final three berths are reserved for Pool C, which includes the remaining institutions in conferences with automatic qualification that are not the conference champion plus remaining independents and members of non-qualifying conferences.

Five first-round games will be conducted Saturday, May 8 with the winners advancing to the second round. Sixteen second-round games will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday May 8-9 with the winners advancing to one of four regional sites Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16. Winners of the four regionals will advance to the semifinals and final, which take place Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23 at Kerr Stadium in Salem, Virginia. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the City of Salem will serve as hosts for the championship.
