Dallas, Pa. (November 3) – The third seeded FDU-Florham field hockey team fell to second-seeded Misericordia University, 1-0, in the semifinal round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) tonight on Mangelsdorf Field.
FDU-Florham (10-8) will await word of a potential bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason tournament, while Misericordia (13-6) will travel to top seed Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon for the MAC Freedom finals.
Tonight's game was a defensive battle and was scoreless for 76 minutes. Misericordia held FDU without a shot or a penalty corner through the first three quarters, before
Haleigh Flukey (Ocean City, NJ) took FDU's first attempt at goal in the 47th minute.
In regulation, the Cougars outshot the Devils 9-2, but neither team could find the back of the cage.
Misericordia had control of the first overtime session and took six shots as well as two penalty corners.
Megan March (Glen Burnie, Md.
) made five saves for the Devils in the first ten minute overtime and kept FDU's hopes alive for a win.
Early in the second overtime, Flukey had back to back shot opportunities. Her first attempt was blocked by the Cougars defense and her second shot ricocheted off the post. It was the host Cougars, however, who were able to score the first goal of the game with 3:28 to play in the second overtime.
Mikayla Cavenas centered the ball from 20 yards out and Madison Posivak tipped the ball into the back of the cage for the 1-0 MAC Freedom Semifinal win.
FDU will now await word of a potential bid to the ECAC Tournament. The ECAC will reveal its selections, hosts and bracket after NCAA bids are awarded on Monday, November 8.
