Volleyball Keeps Postseason Hopes Alive With Sweep of Misericordia

Madison, NJ (October 27) – For the first time since the 2015 season, the FDU-Florham volleyball team swept Misericordia University as the Devils topped the Cougars 25-21, 25-18, 25-21 in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) matchup in the Ferguson Recreation Center.

With the win, FDU kept its hopes of a playoff berth alive. The Devils will need a win over Stevens and will need for Misericordia to lose to King's College tomorrow evening in order to clinch a berth in the MAC Freedom Tournament for the first time since 2018.

The first set was even at 5-5 before FDU went on a 6-0 run sparked by two kills by Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) which created enough separation for the Devils to win the opening stanza. A swing by Lilli Nawrotzki (Flemington, NJ) clinched the first set 25-21 for FDU.

FDU jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second and never relinquished the lead en route to the 25-18 set two victory. The Devils had match point at 24-13 and Misericordia fought it off five times before Abigail Rock (Stewartsville, NJ) swung for a kill for the 25-18 win.

The Devils trailed by four at 15-11 in set three but scored five straight points thanks to an ace by Jessica Garreffa (Chatham, NJ) as well as kills by Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ), Nawrotzki and Fruscione for the 16-15 edge. After both teams traded points and the score sat at 17-17, FDU once again ripped off a big run, this time six consecutive points. With DeFuria holding serve, FDU received four kills on six points as well as a block for the 23-17 advantage.

Back-to-back swings by Rock and Fruscione secured the win in set three, 25-21 and the 3-0 win.

Fruscione tallied her fourth double double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs, while DeFuria registered her 11th double double of the year with 11 kills and 11 digs. Kacie Ros (Bridgewater, NJ) and Garreffa both dished out 17 assists and Garreffa led the Devils with 18 digs.

As a team, FDU led in kills (40-35), assists (39-34) and digs (58-54).

FDU will travel to Hoboken for a MAC Freedom match with Stevens tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm. A win paired with a Misericordia loss will secure the fifth seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament for the Devils.
