Hoboken, NJ (October 28) – In the regular season finale for the FDU-Florham volleyball team, the Devils fell to Stevens Institute of Technology in straight sets 25-14, 25-19, 25-12 tonight. FDU finished the regular season with a record of 13-11 overall and 3-5 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action.
Stevens entered the match second in the most recent NCAA Division III Region IV poll and secured the second seed in the MAC Freedom tournament. FDU, which saw its 2021 regular season come to a close tonight, will await selections for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason tournament in a couple of weeks. Seedings and a bracket for that tournament will be released following the NCAA tournament selection show on Monday, November 8.
Adrienne DeFuria (Randolph, NJ) and
Charlotte Fruscione (Mahwah, NJ) led the Devils with eight and seven kills, respectively, while
Erin Ahart (Kennelon, NJ) led FDU in both assists with nine and digs with 12.
Stevens jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first set and cruised to the 25-14 win. FDU was able to cut its deficit to just four at 16-12 following a 5-0 run that featured four kills by Fruscione and an ace from Ahart, but the Ducks answered with a 9-2 run to end the opening set.
After the second set was knotted at 3-3 early on, a kill by Elle Maggio gave the Ducks a lead it would not relinquish. The Devils kept the hosts within striking distance the entire way through the stanza. Stevens put together a 4-0 run late in the set up 19-16 to pull away 23-16 as the Ducks took it 25-19.
FDU looked to force a fourth set as the Devils raced out to a 7-3 lead in the third stanza. Stevens trailed 9-5, but ended the set and the match by scoring 20 of the final 23 points of the match for the 25-12 win and a sweep in tonight's conference match.
FDU will wait until November 8 to find out its postseason fate in the ECAC tournament. Be sure to keep an eye out for news on FDUdevils.com as the selections get closer. The Devils will be looking for their first berth in the ECAC Tournament since the 2017 season and for the 12th time in program history.
