MADISON, N.J. (September 7, 2019) – The FDU field hockey team registered four first-half goals en route to a 6-0 triumph over Centenary University Saturday.
FDU moves to 3-1, as Centenary falls to 1-2.
After being awarded three early corners, the Devils nearly broke through when senior
Ariana Wexler ripped a shot from just inside the circle. Her low shot barely missed the far post. 1:17 later, FDU took the lead for good. Sophomore
Haleigh Flukey received a pass down low, and her first attempt was knocked around by the defense. She stuffed the rebound back in to give the Devils the advantage.
With 5:35 left in the opening frame, the Devils doubled their lead. Off a missed shot, senior
Jessica Pietracatella's shot was blocked by the Cyclone defender. The carom came to junior
Marissa Colvin, who deposited her attempt into the back of the cage.
FDU notched two quick goals opening the second period. Flukey recorded her second of the afternoon, picking up a rebound off a chance from senior
Marie Pietracatella. Just 15 seconds later, junior
Maggie Sohns weaved into the circle flipped an arching shot over the goalkeeper to stretch the lead to 4-0
The staunch Devils defense held the Cyclones shot-less over the opening first half, while the offense took 12 first-half shot attempts. The Devils also gained 11 penalty corners, to the Cyclones none.
After being held to just two shots over a majority of the third quarter,
Jessica Pietracatella notched a goal with only one second left in the frame. The ball moved in front of the keeper, and junior
Allison Attardi slid a pass to
Jessica Pietracatella for the goal. Just 42 ticks into the final quarter, Sohns netted her second tally of the game, rifling a shot from the top of the circle.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Flukey recorded her second multi-game of the season, scoring twice on three shots.
- Sohns led the team with nine shots, netting a pair of goals.
- The Devils defense did not allow a chance and have allowed a mere five shots in their three wins this season.
- Marie Pietracatella recorded her first point of the season, earning an assist on Flukey's second goal.
