RADNOR, Pa. (September 28, 2019) - The FDU men's soccer team won their fourth straight game with a 2-1 triumph over Cabrini University.
FDU improves to 5-2-1 on the season, and Cabrini falls to 3-5-1.
The Devils got their first shot attempt of the game 6:56 into the game when sophomore Billy Farnan had his shot attempt hauled in by the Cabrini goalie. Less than a minute later, at 7:43, junior Ricky La Stella broke past the Cabrini defense for a shot-on-goal effort, that was saved. Continuing to penetrate, the Devils would soon execute. At 13:05, junior defender Caleb Aryiku took a pass from freshman Oliver Trujillo for the one-touch blast and the score.
Up 1-0, the Devils held the Cavaliers to one shot for the next 20 minutes of action. At 31:18, FDU added to their lead, as sophomore Salvatore Vassallo found La Stella off the throw-in for the score, to put the Devils in the driver's seat, 2-0.
A few minutes later, the Devils defense stepped up, as they recorded the blocked shot on the Cabrini attempt. Struggling to get the ball past the Devils defensive front, the Cavaliers had their final shot attempt of the half saved by sophomore Tiernan Grey, as the Devils took the 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Cavaliers got on the board at 50:41, as they trimmed the Devils lead to 2-1. At 57:45, Farnan recovered an FDU throw-in and took the ball past the Cabrini defense for a shot attempt, which was corralled. At 58:11, the Devils defense stepped up once again with a block on a Cavaliers shot attempt. The Cabrini defense kept attacking, and at 61:26 had their shot blocked by the Devils. Cabrini was able to keep the ball near Devils territory, as at 63:58 they fired off another shot attempt, this time saved Grey.
The Devils recovered the ball back into their possession, and at 69:30 Trujilo took a shot off a free-kick to the Cabrini goalie, which was saved. At 87:10, the Cavaliers had what would be their final shot attempt of the game, as they took a free-kick to the box but had their attempt denied by Grey. As the final buzzer hit, the Devils secured the victory, 2-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The goal by Aryiku was the first of his collegiate career.
- The Devils have won four straight games for the first time since October 2016.
- Grey recorded six saves on the afternoon.
- The Devils had nine shots-on-goal, which was enough to best the Cavalier's seven.
