MADISON, N.J. (September 23, 2019) – Graduate student
Anthony Pares headed in a corner kick from rookie
Oliver Trujillo in the 71st minute to lead the FDU men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Gwynedd Mercy Monday.
FDU improves to 4-2-1 while Gwynedd Mercy drops to 2-6-1-.
The Devils nearly got on the board two minutes in, as senior
Adam Gill had his attempt cleared off the line off a corner kick. Just 1:06 later, FDU made no mistake and got on the board. After corralling a loose ball, junior
Brandon McGregor unleashed a rocket from 25 yards out past the keeper to give FDU the early 1-0 edge. The visitors leveled the game in the 18th minute, as Tyler Bascone flipped the ball up and moved around the Devils defenders for the goal.
Sophomore
Salvatore Vassallo almost snapped the tie in the 28th minute, as his shot off a corner kick pinged the crossbar and bounced away. Sophomore
Tiernan Grey made stops in the 30th and 31st minutes to keep the score level at one, and the two sides entered break deadlocked.
FDU held an 18-7 edge in shots at halftime and also attempted all six corner kicks over the first 45 minutes.
In the 55th minute, sophomore
Michael Rosario backheeled a pass to Pares who made his way into the box. Pares was hauled down by a Griffins defender, and FDU was awarded a penalty kick. Trujillo stepped up to the spot and blasted one past the diving keeper to give the home a one-goal advantage. The two sides battled on, and this time Gwynedd Mercy was awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box. Kevin Bowers took the kick and converted, tying the match at two.
After junior
Ricky La Stella had a shot that was deflected out of bounds, the Devils were given a corner kick. Trujillo curled one in and Pares got his head on it, deflecting the shot past the goalkeeper and giving FDU 3-2 lead with 19:09 left. The Devils defense locked down, allowing just one on target over the rest of the game to preserve the 3-2 triumph.
