HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 21, 2019) - The FDU men's soccer team slipped past host Centenary University 3-2 Saturday afternoon.
FDU jumps to 3-2-1 on the season, as Centenary falls to 1-8.
Right off the jump at 1:42, junior Caleb Aryiku fired a shot off that landed just wide. The Devils continued their attack, with shots by junior Brandon McGregor and junior Ricky La Stella but were unable to find the back of the net. At 12:54, sophomore goaltender Tiernan Grey stopped a Centenary attempt, for his first save on the afternoon. At 16:25, the Devils struck first, as La Stella took the ball to the goal himself, to give the Devils the 1-0 lead.
Grey came up with three more stops, as he prevented the Cyclones from scoring at 22nd, 27th and 31st minutes. Centenary soon tied the score, as they connected for a goal in the 33rd minute. FDU wasted little time to put the lead back in their hands, as in the 35th minute, freshman Oliver Trujillo converted a penalty kick. Now in the latter part of the half, sophomore Salvatore Vassallo extended the FDU lead, as he executed off of a pass from sophomore Michael Rosario.
Early in the second half in the 48th minute, the Cyclones trimmed the deficit to 3-2. Looking to get their lead back up, Trujillo and McGregor failed to score on back-to-back shots-on-goal attempts. The Devils were whistled for a foul in the box in the 64th minute, and the Cyclones had their best shot attempt of the game, as they were awarded a penalty kick. The attempt was stopped, as Grey came up with the huge save for the Devils. At 78:40, the Cyclones got what would be their last shot-on-goal attempt of the day, and Grey stifled the shot. The Devils defense went on to prevent any other scores, as they held on for the win.
