MADISON, N.J. (September 21, 2019) –The FDU field hockey team bested Union College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-0.
The Devils improve to 6-2 on the season, while Union falls to 2-3.
FDU had the offensive control early, as senior Maggie Sohns notched two shots-on-goal attempts in the first ten minutes of action. Senior Marie Pietracatella followed a penalty corner by freshman Lauren Nawrotzki with a shot attempt that was blocked. Still, on the verge of scoring, junior Marissa Colvin had her shot attempt saved at 14:45. As the first quarter wrapped up, the score remained tied at 0-0.
In the second quarter, the Devils kept up their stifling offense, as Sohns once again broke past the Dutchwoman defense, for a shot attempt at 23:41. At 27:31, the Devils fired off three straight shots, as Colvin saw her shot saved and then sophomore Haleigh Flukey got in on the action as she fired off back-to-back shot attempts. Both teams failed to get on the board, as the game went into the halftime break still at 0-0.
The Devils stormed out of the break aimed to execute, and it would not take long. At 31:08, junior Allison Attardi took the outside pass from Sohns and connected for the score. At 42:32, Union failed to take advantage of two penalty corners, as junior goalie Megan March saved two shots in five seconds. With the clock ticking down, FDU took the 1-0 lead into the final frame.
With pressure to get on the board, the Dutchwoman had their attempt squandered by March once again. At 56:18, Union came up short to on the stroke attempt, as the shot hit the post. At 57:44, the Devils added to their lead by way of a goal from sophomore Emilee Vizzuso off of an assist by junior Riley Mullan. FDU would hold on to the edge and take the matchup, 2-0.
