MADISON, N.J. (September 25, 2019) - Junior Marissa Colvin netted the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute to lead the FDU field hockey team past No. 11 Montclair State University 2-1 Wednesday.
FDU moves to 7-2 on the season, as MSU drops to 6-2. Tonight's win was the first over Montclair State in 14 meetings, dating back to 1999.
The Devils threatened early, recording consecutive shots in the fifth minute. Sophomore Haleigh Flukey had her shot cleared off the line by a Red Hawk defender before Colvin had her shot denied by the goalkeeper. FDU's defense was the story of the opening frame, limiting Montclair to just one shot in the first 15 minutes.
FDU broke through the opening tally in the 26th minute. Flukey inserted a corner and immediately moved to the near post. Sophomore Sydney Moskal put an attempt on goal and Flukey deflected it past the goalkeeper for her team-best 13th goal of the season. FDU did not surrender a shot in the period and entered halftime with a 1-0 edge.
The visiting Red Hawks leveled the game in the 35th minute, as Kellie Vizzuso deflected a shot by Elizabeth Cimiluca into the goal. After the Devils were denied on a penalty corner, the referee signaled another one for the hosts. Off the insert, the ball was knocked down before senior Ariana Wexler slipped the ball through to Colvin. Colvin was able to push a shot past the Montclair goalkeeper for her fifth marker of the season.
Junior Megan March made her first save of the night in the 45th minute, kicking a shot away with 41 seconds remaining in the period. The Devils defensive unit buckled down in the fourth quarter, holding the potent Red Hawk offense shotless. Junior Riley Mullan had her shot stopped in the 56th minute, and the Devils were able to keep the ball in the corner to help run down the clock.
