MADISON, N.J. (September 13, 2019) - The FDU football team was topped by William Paterson 28-23 in their home-opener Friday evening.
The defeat drops the Devils to 1-1 on the campaign, as William Paterson improves to 1-1.
The Devils picked up right where they left off from its 56-point performance last weekend as FDU connected on their first drive of the game. Late in the opening drive, junior Anthony Caserta found junior Rory Sullivan for a 10-yard gain to put the Devils deep into Pioneers territory at the 24-yard line. Following a pair of Caserta completions, FDU sat at the five-yard line and turned to junior Tyler Adams to put them on the scoreboard, as he hauled in a Caserta pass for the five-yard touchdown. Adams reception wrapped up a drive that saw the Devils total 86 yards. Up 6-0, senior Nick Maciejewski executed on the extra pat to put FDU in the driver's seat at 7-0 and to wrap up a 64-yard drive.
On the defensive end, the Devils were able to halt any WPU attempts to score, including a forced fumble by senior Mihajlo Simakoski on a William Paterson run attempt which was recovered by sophomore Jake Swindasz. Entering the second quarter, FDU was prime to extend their lead and did so with 11:26 remaining on the clock. On a drive that was started by four straight completion from Caserta, the Devils marched down to the 15-yard line and turned to Maciejewski who connected on the try to put FDU up 10-0. The Devils held on to the lead, as the defensive unit any scoring attempts by the Pioneers.
Coming out of the break, FDU used two stops on the WPU offensive to give Castera and the offense the ball visitors 43 yard-line. Castera got to work quickly as he connected on seven attempts, including a 20 yarder to Sullivan. Facing third down at the WPU six yard-line, freshman Mark Kepler ran past the defense for the touchdown. Now up 16-0, Maciejewski was successful on his third kick of the game, to give the Devils the 17-0 lead. On the next play, WPU began a drive that led to their first score of the game, as they cut the Devils lead to 17-7.
In the fourth quarter, WPU kept the momentum on their side as they scored again, this time to cut the lead to 17-14. A few drives later, William Paterson took their first lead of the game, and would later add on more points. Down 28-17 with just 2:49 remaining on the clock, and at their own 31-yard line, FDU would not go away quietly. A drive highlighted by a 37-yard connection from Caserta to Sullivan would later lead to a 13-yard Camillo touchdown reception. Down 28-23, the Devils failed on a two-point conversion. FDU was unable to recover the outside kick, and the Pioneers picked up a crucial first down to seal the game.
