LA PLUME, PA. (August 30, 2019) – Sophomore Haleigh Flukey recorded her first career hat trick to lead the FDU field hockey team past Keystone College 6-1 Friday evening.
The win was the first for first-year Head Coach Maura Johnston.
The Devils did not wait long to score their first goal of the 2019 campaign as sophomore Sydney Moskal connected off an assist by junior Marissa Colvin to give the Devils the early 1-0 advantage in the third minute. The Devils would then go on to get past the Giants defenders for six more shot attempts in the period, compared to the Giants zero shots. FDU continued to put pressure on as they took seven shots in the second period but were unable to find the back of the cage.
The Devils strong defensive effort held the Giants to zero shots attempted in the first two periods, while taking 15 of their own.
Coming out of the break, the Devils added to their lead in the 39th minute with a goal off the stick of Flukey, senior Maggie Sohns earning an assist. Flukey netted her second of the evening nearly two minutes later, converting a Sohns feed.
With the 3-0 advantage, the Devils would continue to add on to their lead as Colvin found the back of the net on a pass from Jessica Pietracatella. The goal would cap off the Devils three-score period in which they outshot the Giants 9-1.
Heading into the final period with a 4-0 advantage, the Devils continued to attack the Giants defense as junior Allison Attardi connected off an assist from Sohns. With two minutes remaining in the contest, Flukey capped off the scoring and her hat trick with an unassisted tally.
