HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 13, 2019) - The FDU-Florham men's tennis team topped Marietta College 6-3 before falling 7-2 to Catholic University Wednesday.
FDU is now 3-3 on the season.
MATCH 1: FDU-Florham 6, Marietta 3
The Devils took a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches. After dropping an 8-3 decision at the first flight, FDU rebounded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior Chris Fiorenza and freshman JT Murray engaged in a hard-fought battle at No. 2, picking up an 8-6 victory. Sophomore Tyler Schacher and rookie Michael LaNeve also were in a tough fight, eventually pulling away and winning 8-5.
Senior Rich Bennett got the Devils going with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win at the top of the singles lineup, while LaNeve earned his second win of the day with an 8-0 blanking at No. 6 singles. Despite faltering at No. 2 singles, freshman John Bricker earned the win at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
Murray and Fiorenza each went to three sets at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively. They both won the first frame before falling by an identical 6-1 scoreline respectively. Murray squeaked out a 10-8 win in third, but Fiorenza dropped a 10-8 decision as the Devils closed out the win.
MATCH 2: Catholic 7, FDU-Florham 2
Although the Devils suffered an 8-2 setback at No. 3 doubles, the other two flights were close the entire way. Junior Kevin Weller and Bennett battled hard before finally falling 8-6. FDU was able to pull out the No. 2 flight with Fiorenza and Murray notching the win. Neither side was able to firmly pull in front, but the Devils duo was able to prevail.
Bennett had a dominant first set at No. 1 singles, winning comfortably 6-0. He dropped the second in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4) before losing the third 10-7. Bricker also competed well at No. 3, fending off some tough points, but fell 6-3, 6-4.
Murray had the team support behind him at No. 4 singles, as the two split the opening two sets. The rookie took the opening set 7-5 before falling 6-2 in the second. One of the last men's matches to finish, Murray valiantly fought before bowing out 10-8. Brendon Urbano was Devils winner at No. 6 singles, putting away a 6-2, 6-3 decision.
