Men's Soccer Topped by Wilkes in MAC Freedom Opener

WILKES BARRE, Pa. (October 5, 2019) - The FDU men's soccer team fell in a 2-1 contest to Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon.

FDU falls to 5-4-1, 0-1-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom, as Wilkes improves to 5-3-2, 1-0-0 in the conference.

Sophomore Tiernan Grey was tested early, and he prevailed, as he secured the save off of the Wilkes attempt. Junior Ricky La Stella was the first Devils player with a shot attempt on the day, as his effort was saved in the ninth minute. In the 10th minute, junior Brandon McGregor broke past the Wilkes defenders for a shot attempt, that the Colonel goalkeeper corralled.

In the 15th minute, sophomore Diego Stanziola's attempt was also stopped short by the goalie. In the 22nd minute, the Colonels scored the first goal of the game, which put them in the lead, 1-0. FDU kept charging on offense, as they recorded two more shots-on-goals in the half, as La Stella and sophomore Jack Zaretsky both had their attempts saved.

Grey started the second half by recording another save, as he denied the Wilkes attempt to add to their lead. The Devils proceeded to attack the defensive unit of Wilkes, as freshman Oliver Trujilo's shot was saved in the 53nd minute. The hosts doubled their lead in the 57th minute after fending off consecutive corner kicks by the Devils.

The Devils were able to cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute, as junior Jonathan Rodriguez scored off a turnover in the box. Grey rejected two more attempts by Wilkes to tack on to their lead, as he recorded saves in the 79th, and 89th minute. FDU, however, was unable to tie the score, as Wilkes came away with the win.
