Field Hockey Edged by Stevens in Shootout, 3-2

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 30, 2019) - The FDU field hockey team fell in overtime to in-state rival the Stevens Institute of Technology 3-2 on Wednesday night.

The Devils move to 15-3 overall and 6-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. The Ducks improve to 11-7 and 4-3 in the MAC Freedom. 

The Devils defensive unit was stifling as they blocked the Ducks first two shots of the second period. In the 18th minute, Stevens fired off another shot attempt, but Devils junior goalie Megan March brought in the save. However, on their next effort, the Ducks hit the back of the net to take the 1-0 lead.

In the 31st minute, the Ducks scored again, to add to their lead. Down 2-0, the Devils' offense began to penetrate as they were aiming to cut into the deficit. In the 34th minute, senior Jessica Pietracatella broke past the Ducks' defense for a shot attempt, that the Stevens goalie saved. In the 35th minute, the Devils got off another shot attempt, when senior Maggie Sohns had her attempt saved. 

Closing in on their first score of the game, the Devils executed in the 37th minute. Sophomore Halle Ferm recorded the score off of a pass from junior Marissa Colvin. Trailing 2-1, the Devils continued to keep the momentum firmly on their side. In the 39th minute, Sohns and Colvin fired off back-to-back shots that the Stevens goalkeeper saved. Off her rebound, Colvin fired a shot and hit the back of the net for the score. Tied 2-2, both teams remained scoreless for the rest of the period, as the game headed into the final frame knotted up.

In the fourth period, the Devils kept control of the ball as they fired off the first four shots. In the 58th minute, sophomore Haleigh Flukey had her attempt saved by Stevens. In the 60th minute, Stevens had their final effort to keep the game from going into overtime, as they fired off a shot attempt. Their try was denied by March, forcing the game into extra time.

In the 65th minute, Sohns registered another attempt, but the Ducks saved the shot. In the 70th minute, the Ducks forced the ball into FDU territory and registered back-to-back shot attempts. The Ducks' first attempt was rejected by March. Three seconds later, Stevens fired off another try with the clock running down, but sophomore Sydney Moskal stepped up for the Devils, with the defensive save. 

In the second overtime period, March stopped the Ducks shot attempt in the 71st minute for the save. For the remainder of the period, Pietracatella and Sohns both recorded two shot attempts. Both teams could not score, forcing a shootout. In the shootout, both sides made a pair of attempts to force sudden-death. The Ducks converted their second try to win the game 3-2.
