STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (October 26, 2019) – The FDU women's swim team was topped by the College of Staten Island 110-95 Saturday afternoon.
It was the first meet of the season for the Devils.
FDU started strong, claiming first place in the 200-yard medley relay. Rookies Emma Dougherty, Sarah Dougherty, and Paige Strangeway teamed with junior Molly Miller for a time of 2:05.14. Miller anchored the event, turning in a 50-yard time of 26.43. The junior standout also took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle and was second in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 1,000, Miller bested her two other competitors by over two minutes, touching the wall in 11:19.23. In the 500, she clocked in at 5:26.65.
Emma Dougherty also picked up a first-place time, as she finished the 200-yard freestyle in 2:12.46. Rookie Sarah Jurimas was fourth in 2:34.19, while sophomore Anna Hess was fifth in 2:35.92. Freshman Emily Maciejewski and sophomore Munro McLaren scored points in the 50-free, as Maciejewski was edged out by a mere .01 seconds out of first place. McLaren was fifth in 31.73. Like her sister, Sarah Dougherty took first, with her victory coming in 2:23.44 in the 200-yard IM.
FDU notched five points in the 100-yard butterfly, with sophomore Gianna Ritto, freshman Mikayla DeMarco and Hess finishing third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Strangeway and Jurimas finished within 1.29 seconds of each in the 100-free, while Sarah and Emma Dougherty went 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke. Ritto and DeMarco claimed points in the 500-freestyle, while Strangeway took second in the 100-breaststroke with a mark of 1:20.71. The team closed out the day with a second-place time of 2:00.84 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
