STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (October 26, 2019) – The FDU men's swim team was downed by the College of Staten Island 126-92 Saturday afternoon.
Both teams were competing in their season-opening meet.
The Devils nabbed a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay to start the afternoon off. Junior Josh Atkins teamed with rookies Justin Atkins and James Dougherty and sophomore Anthony Muschiatti for a time of 1:48.73. The Atkins duo went 2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, as Josh was second in 1:59.04, and Justin was third in 1:59.47. Justin Atkins picked up a victory in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 1:01.02. That time was .77 ticks ahead of the second-place time. Josh Atkins won the 100-yard backstroke, winning in 1:01.63 and edging his opponent by a mere .02 seconds
Junior Eric Bang claimed first place in three events, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard IM, and the 500-yard freestyle. Bang took 1,000-free in 10:17.75, the 200-IM in 2:07.99, and the 500-free in 5:00.73. Sophomore James Butcher notched a pair of second-place times in the 1,000 in 12:36.93 and the 500-free in 6:06.04. Muschiatti led a quartet of Devils finishers in the 50-free, as he placed second in 24.01, just .07 out of first.
Dougherty took third in the 200-IM in 2:14.99 with Muschiatti claiming first in the 100-free. The sophomore notched a mark of 52.97 in the event. Rookie John Hulsart recorded a third-place time of 1:03.49 in the 100-backstroke and was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.98. Dougherty was second in the same event, turning in a time of 1:06.98. Hulsart, Butcher, sophomore Chris Kunka, and junior Juan Melendez wrapped up the day with a second-place time of 1:53.7 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
