DOYLESTOWN, Pa (October 23, 2019) – Sophomore
Haleigh Flukey scored twice to send the FDU field hockey team to a 3-1 conference win over Delaware Valley University Wednesday.
FDU notched their 10th straight victory and improved to 14-2 on the season, including a 5-0 mark in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. Delaware Valley drops to 5-10, 1-4 in the conference. With the victory, the Devils clinched a berth in the upcoming MAC Freedom Conference Championship, the first team in the conference to clinch.
The Devils executed on their first shot of the game, as junior
Marissa Colvin opened the scoring with a low shot from 10 yards out. Junior
Megan March denied the Aggies on their first attempt of the game, but the hosts pulled even with just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Delaware Valley nearly took the lead with 24 seconds remaining, but March stopped the attempt.
Neither side generated much offense in the second quarter, but the Devils were able to break through with a mere 17 seconds left in the period. Sophomore
Haleigh Flukey pushed the Devils back in front, as she was able to drive a low shot into the corner of the goal to give FDU a 2-1 advantage entering halftime.
Both sides attempted three shots over the first 30 minutes of play, while the host Aggies held a slim 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
Delaware Valley came out firing to begin the second half, taking the first two shots within a 12-second span. March made a save on the first attempt before the second went wide left. Flukey nearly doubled the Devils advantage in the 44th minute, but her shot was cleared off the line by an Aggies defender. Despite not adding to the lead, FDU took five of the seven shot attempts in the frame.
The Devils defense was stifling in the fourth quarter, not allowing the Aggies to attempt a shot. FDU put six shots on the Delaware Valley goalkeeper that were turned away. With just 2:49 remaining in the stanza, Flukey was finally able to give FDU the two-goal cushion, as she dribbled through defenders before scoring from in close.
