Sohns Becomes Career Assist Leader As Field Hockey Tops Misericordia 3-2

DALLAS, Pa. (October 19, 2019) – Senior Maggie Sohns became the FDU field hockey career-leader in assists as they knocked off Misericordia University 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

The Devils move to 13-2 overall, 4-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom while the Cougars are 8-8, 2-2 in the MAC Freedom.

The host Cougars needed just 2:49 to take a 1-0 lead, as a pass across the goal-mouth was tipped in at the left post. FDU responded with their first shot of the 1:48 later, and it also went in. Sohns fed classmate Jessica Pietracatella, who fired a shot from 10 yards out that just went inside the left post. With that assist, Sohns collected her 28th career help, surpassing Barbara Legg's total of 27 from 1986-89.

The Devils controlled the second quarter, taking four of the six shots but were unable to find the back of the cage. The two sides would enter halftime level at one, as the Devils held a slim 7-5 edge in shots.

FDU took their first lead of the game 1:25 into the third quarter. Off a corner, senior Marie Pietracatella had her shot stopped by the goalkeeper. The rebound came to Sohns, who slammed the rebound home, giving FDU a 2-1 advantage. Sohns had two chances to double the lead late in the frame, but one attempt was stopped while the other went side.

The Devils added to their lead in the 51st minute. Jessica Pietracatella moved around a defender at the near post and scored to give FDU a two-goal cushion. The Cougars came right back, scoring off a corner a mere 72 seconds later. The Devils defense buckled down and held Misericordia shot-less over the 8:45 to claim the 3-2 victory.
