Men's Soccer Battles Back to Earn Draw with Misericordia

MADISON, N.J. (October 12, 2019) - The FDU men's soccer earned a 1-1 draw with Misericordia in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play Saturday evening.

The Devils are now 5-5-2 this season and 0-1-1 in MAC Freedom games. The Cougars move to 3-5-4 and 0-0-2 in conference play.

The story of the first half was defense, as both teams were rendered scoreless. In the fourth and fifth minute, graduate student Anthony Pares fired off contested shot attempts, that the Cougars were able to come up with. In the 15th minute, the Devils found themselves in Cougars territory, as junior Brandon McGregor got off the shot attempt, that the Cougars goalkeeper saved. The Devils attack was strong, as Pares had two more shot attempts in the 17th and 20th minute, that the Cougars defense blocked. Both teams continued to play keep away, as the game entered the halftime break.

The Cougars struck right away in the second half, as they executed off their shot attempt 30 seconds into the half. The Cougars offensive unit picked up steam, but in the 70th minute, sophomore goalie Tiernan Grey denied their attempt to extend the lead. In the 76th minute, Grey stepped-up once again for the Devils, as he corralled the Cougars shot attempt.

Aiming to record their first goal of the game, the Devils would do just that in the 86th minute. With time trickling down, freshman Oliver Trujillo quickly fed the ball to junior Ricky La Stella, who soared the ball to sophomore Michael Rosario. Rosario leaped up and headed in La Stella's assist past the Cougars goalkeeper to tie the score at 1-1. The final horn sounded, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, Rosario's attempt in the 100th minute was saved by the Cougars. In the second overtime frame, the Devils recorded one shot attempt, as sophomore Salvatore Vassallo had his shot blocked in the 109th minute. Overtime could not decide a winner, as the game ended in a tie.
