MADISON, N.J. (October 11, 2019) - The FDU field hockey team defeated Wilkes in double overtime by a score of 3-2, in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action.
The Devils improve to 11-2 overall, and 3-0 in MAC Freedom play. Wilkes falls to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The first quarter of the game was highly contested defensively, as both teams were held scoreless. In the fourth minute of action, Marie Pietracatella tallied a defensive-save, as she denied the Colonels attempt to score. In the 13th minute, the Devils recorded back-to-back shots-on-goal, as junior Marissa Colvin and sophomore Haleigh Flukey fired off attempts.
In the second quarter, both defensive units continued to shine, as the game remained scoreless. In the 21st minute, junior goalie Megan March corraled-in the attempt by Wilkes to record her first save of the game.
Wilkes wasted little time to get on the board in the third quarter, as they struck in the 34th minute to take the 1-0 lead. However, the Devils would not trail for long. In the 38th minute, Flukey passed to senior Maggie Sohns off of the corner attempt, who flipped it back to Flukey for the score. As time was ticking down in the quarter, Wilkes would take back the lead, with a shot in the 44th minute. Wilkes led 2-1, leading into the fourth and final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Devils were aimed to tie the score back up. In the 50th minute, March kept the Colonels off the board, as she recorded the save. In the 57th minute, the Devils took advantage of the Wilkes penalty, as Colvin stepped up to the line for a penalty stroke. Colvin fired off the attempt, as it hit the back of the cage, tying the score. Time expired, as the game would go into overtime, tied at 2-2.
In the first overtime frame, March saved the Wilkes attempt to score in the 62nd minute. In the 64th minute, it was March again, as she denied the Colonels attempt to win the game. Wilkes broke through the Devils defense in the 67th minute, but March once again stopped the attempt. The looked to capitalize late, but Colvin and Sohns had shots that just went wide in the 68th minute.
In the second overtime, the Devils would lock in the victory. In the 76th minute, Flukey took a pass from sophomore Emilee Vizzuso and fired it past the Wilkes goalie, to cap off the Devils win.
