Field Hockey Knocks Off Mary Washington For Best Start in Program History

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 15, 2019) - The FDU Florham field hockey team defeated Mary Washington by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Devils have eclipsed the best start in program history.

The Devils improve to 12-2 on the season, as Mary Washington moves to 5-8.

In the first quarter, junior goalie Megan March made her presence known immediately, as she recorded two saves in the second minute of the game. In the third minute of action, senior Maggie Sohns tallied the Devils' first shot-on-goal attempt of the game. In the fourth minute, Sohns kept attacking the Eagles defensive unit, and this time she was successful with her effort. In the fourth minute, Sohns fired away a shot deep off a pass from sophomore Sydney Moskal, for the score.

FDU did not take long to add to their lead, as in the 13th minute junior Marissa Colvin took advantage of a penalty stroke and executed on the attempt for the goal. With the score by Colvin, the Devils extended their lead to 2-0. With time expiring in the quarter, the Eagles aimed to cut into the Devils lead. On MWU's two shot attempts in the 15th minute, junior Nicole LaMorte tallied a defensive save on both attempts, to deny the Eagles from scoring.

In the second quarter, FDU continued to keep Mary Washington scoreless. In the 22nd and 30th minutes, March corralled in the Eagles attempts to score. FDU's defense remained stifling against the MWU offense, as the score stayed at 2-0 going into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Eagles kept looking for opportunities to score but were denied. March stopped the MWU attempt to score in the 35th minute. In the 45th minute, Sohns broke past the MWU defense for the shot attempt, which was saved by the Eagles goalie.

To begin the fourth and final frame, March rejected the Eagles shot attempt. The Eagles kept attacking, as in the 48th minute, they recorded two more attempts. The attempts to get on the board were once again stopped by March. In the 49th minute, MWU connected on their attempt to shorten the deficit to 2-1. As time wound down, senior Jessica Pietracatella got off two shot attempts that the Eagles goalie was able to come up with. The final horn sounded, as the Devils secured the 2-1 win.
