Field Hockey Knocks Off William Paterson 3-2 in Double Overtime

Flukey Nets Second Straight Overtime Game-Winning Goal

MADISON, N.J. (October 1, 2019) – The FDU field hockey team defeated William Paterson University in double-overtime on Tuesday night by a score of 3-2.

The Devils improve to 9-2 on the season, and the Pioneers fall to 6-4.

In a highly contested defensive first period, the Devils registered three shots. Senior Maggie Sohns first shot attempt landed wide of the goal, and her second shot attempt was blocked. The third Devils attempt was from sophomore Haleigh Flukey who fired off a shot that the William Paterson goalie was able to corral for the save. Junior Megan March tallied two saves in five seconds, as she batted away back-to-back WPU attempts.

Through two periods the game remained scoreless. The Devils defense blocked a Pioneers' attempt to take the lead at 24:03. In the 29th minute, Sohns once again broke through the William Paterson defensive unit; however, this time her shot attempt was saved.

In the third period, the Devils got themselves on the scoresheet. In the 44th minute, Sohns found sophomore Sydney Moskal off a penalty corner to give FDU the 1-0 lead. Playing with the lead, the Devils needed just 49 seconds to double their lead. This time, a Sohns assist led to another Devils score, as Flukey found the back of the net.

The Devils entered the fourth period with a 2-0 lead over WPU. At 52:27 the Pioneers attempt to get on the board was stopped short by March, who recorded the save. The Pioneers, however, were able to score two tallies within a 1:42 span to level the game.

At 2-2, FDU knocked on the door of scoring several times during the first overtime period. Sophomore Emilee Vizzuso had three shot attempts for the Devils during the period. Both teams could not utilize the ten-minute frame to their advantage, calling for a second overtime period.

In the second overtime period, it was Flukey once again. 27 seconds into the period, Flukey took a pass from Vizzuso and broke away from the defenders for the game-deciding goal.
