MADISON, N.J. (January 7, 2019) - The FDU-Florham men's basketball team lost to Rutgers-Newark 58-39, Monday night.
Rutgers-Newark started the game on a 21-1 run over the first nine minutes of the game. The Devils sole point during the run came on a free throw by the senior
Eric Ray. Over the next seven minutes the Devils outscored the Scarlet Raiders 11-8 to cut the deficit to 17. Junior
Andy Fleurantin had nine points during the run, including two threes. Rutgers-Newark closed out the first half with the final five tallies to extend their lead to 39-15, giving them their largest lead of the half.
The Scarlet Raiders began the second half on a 5-1 run before the Devils responded with 14-3 spurt of their own capped off by a corner three by sophomore
Oliver Ortman to make it a 47-30 game. The Devil rally was fueled by six points from senior
Darren Davy, with sophomore
Shawn Smith notching four points of his own.
Junior
Kenneth LaRocca added a free throw after a technical foul was called on the visiting coach. However, this was as close as the Devils would get as Rutgers-Newark put the game away with a 9-0 run of their own down the stretch. Baskets by junior
Tino Gonzalez and sophomore
Niko Regus in the final minute brought the deficit down to 19 as time expired.
