ST. DAVIDS, Pa. (January 9, 2019) - The FDU-Florham men's basketball team fell to Eastern University 89-79 Wednesday evening.
The Devils drop to 4-10 overall, 1-2 within the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom. The Eagles improve to 8-6, 1-2 in conference.
The game began with a lot of action, as the two sides combined for 18 points during the opening 3:29. The hosts nabbed their biggest lead of the opening period with 15:27 left, as a layup in the paint capped off a 6-0 run. The two sides continued to keep the game close, but another 6-0 spurt forced FDU into a timeout with 7:17 left in the period.
Behind the three point shooting from sophomore Oliver Ortman, the Devils pulled in front 34-32 as he connected from behind the arc. During the opening half, Ortman connected three times from long range, as the Devils hit five three's in the first stanza. Eastern briefly regained the lead, but senior Darren Davy hit a layup with 35 seconds remaining to give FDU a slim one point edge heading into halftime.
The Devils committed just three turnovers during the first 20 minutes, and Davy pulled down three offensive rebounds in 15:22 of action.
Over the first 7:42 of the second half, neither side was able to lead by more than one or two points. Junior Andy Fleurantin knocked down four from behind the arc including three during an early portion of the stanza. With the score even at 53, Eastern went on a 15-6 rally to pull in front for good.
The gap swelled to double-digits with 5:09 remaining, but an Ortman trey cut the lead down to five with just 45 seconds remaining. The Devils were unable to pull any closer, as the Eagles hit seven free throws down the stretch to establish the final margin.
